Early findings of Ixaris’s Travel Megatrends Report launching at Travolution European Summit on 26 September in London reveals that 36% of travel companies have no idea what transaction fees are costing their business.

The research, comprising an industry survey distributed in collaboration with Travolution and interviews with 15 leaders across the travel ecosystem, indicates a disconnect between the travel sector’s pledge to improve the customer experience and careful thinking around operational efficiencies and the bottom line.

This is an oversight by travel agencies who have all to gain from a smooth payment process that results in more booking conversions. Giving due attention around mid/back office operations not only leads to savings and efficiencies, but also helps re-engineer the way customers are served and their orders processed – driving sales and helping speed up the payment of suppliers.

For travel providers this is a critical challenge, which is well understood by accommodation disruptor Airbnb. According to David Holyoke, global head of Airbnb for Work, keeping in tune with generational needs and changing choices are key. He ascribes the company’s success to the simplicity of its platform and its ability to provide a seamless check-out, more relevant choice and personalisation, and ultimately handling payment and settlement of transactions without any friction.
